How will it feel if you get to a certain place in your life and everything you want is easily accessible to you. For example, employers are looking for you because of your skills, business opportunities are looking for you because of your experience, speaking engagements are looking for you because you have mastered the art of speaking and delivering life changing speeches, brands are looking to work with you because they know your are one of the best bloggers…………….
Today, I will be speaking to you about “don’t just be a good worker”. The first time I heard the word don’t just be a good worker, I had an ah ah moment. What do I mean?
It means in life, everybody is replaceable. Everybody! I believe very much that it is important you give your best shoot in your job as a worker / employee. If you like, do what you have being paid to do to the best of your ability. However, doing your best at work is not an anti dote for being fired or made redundant. There is an exception though, the only way you will not be caught unawares is when you are not just a good worker……
Here’s What I mean:
If your life is dependent on just your job, you are a just a good worker. If aside your job, you do not train or acquire more skills for growth, you are just a good worker, if your are made redundant while on a job but don’t have anything else to fall back on, you WERE just a good worker.
Here’s How Not to be Just a Good Worker:
1, Invest In or Develop Yourself:
This means, yes you have a job, you must be willing to acquire more skills, learn something that may or increase your earning potential or promotion or things that can rescue you if your employers decides to fire everybody. Trust me, self development or investing in your self is one of the best gifts you can ever give to yourself.
2, Don’t put your eggs in one basket:
Yes, you love your job but did you know you are working for your employers to make profit first. Yes, you are! And that is why there is ALWAYS target to meet profit.
For all your eggs to not be in one basket, once you reach a certain stage or position in your career, begin to look for opportunities for growth.
Last time I was speaking to some youth in a place in Dublin and a lady from Google was also there to speak. She said, “I have been with Google for 8years. I came from Kenya then to South Africa and now to Dublin doing the same thing. Although I love my job, I feel stale in my role. I feel complacent. I feel like all my eggs are just in one basket. I am tired but can’t move on. Although I am happy getting paid every month, I feel like all my eggs are just in one basket. One thing I haven’t done is to acquire more knowledge to progress and now I know this is a mistake, I will work on that. My advise to you is to never put all your eggs in one basket. Always look for an opportunity to grow.
Although I have known this for a while now, fulfilment doesn’t come from just getting paid big bucks, it comes from doing what we truly love. I shared more in this post HERE
By the way, I was happy to see the “tallest lady” I know in my area yesterday in Boots. She used to work in MacDonalds but now works in Boots. I was curious to start a conversation with her and in the conversation, she told me she wanted to be a Pharmacy Technician. I couldn’t help but to say well done and congratulations, you are on your way. Her move may not look like a big step but she is on her way. It takes guts to move or change direction in life.
3, What will you do?
If after being a good worker for the longest of time, you are made redundant, what will you do? Yes, if you are lucky and living in a country where there is “law and order”, you get paid some redundancy pay. But what if you live in a country where good bye is the best redundancy pay you get. What will you do?
To be in the best position to move on or to find other opportunities or be competitive or attractive to other employers, you must pay attention to TIP number one above.
Some things to try: train or up-skill while you are on a job, do that professional exam, do that night course, learn a new skill or hand work, find and develop your gifts….this is best of all. One thing nobody can ever take away from you are your GIFTS! Nobody can take that away from you.
My book, use what you have will help you find and develop your gift + maximise your potential. You can get your copy HERE.
I want to encourage you not to just be a good worker but a good investor in self. This will change your life continually. Did you know just reading books can help rescue you from being just a good worker? Did you know? I am just saying The best things are hidden treasures in books be it the bible or any other good book.
I want to thank you so much for stopping by today. I am always happy to see you stop by. The best gift you can give to yourself is not the gift of buying that lovely pair of shoes, it is the gift of developing or investing in yourself so you are not just a good worker for the rest of your life.
Wishing you a lovely week ahead.
Much Love, Mojisola.

Well said Mojisola. Everyone is replaceable. A few friends of mine have been let go from their jobs because the companies are trying to cut cost.. all about the bottom line. It’s just so important to invest in yourself all the time. Thanks for the Monday motivation. Hope you have a great week ahead.

It is a shame to get caught on the bottom line. This was me a while back and that is why I write from my experience……….I was a good worker……… That will never happen again
