After his defeat in the Saturday night fight in August 2017, Conor McGregor partied at the Encore Beach Club in Las Vegas according to TMZ. Even though he lost the fight to Floyd Mayweather, he was said to have earned around $100million (€83.9million) according to Irish Independent + more on the way from other deals. Trust me, with that kind of money, any “loser” would party and foot the bill of 85k at a post-fight party. But wait, yep, McGregor lost the Saturday night fight to Floyd Mayweather but truly, is he really a loser?
Today, on Motivation for Monday, I have a small story to share with you on WHY I think McGregor is not a loser and WHY we must all “be McGregored” by learning these 3 lessons from his life so far……..
Not to sound entitled, I do not know McGregor, never seen or met him in person but I live about 15 to 20 minutes drive from him. He lives where the “very rich” people lives. The most inspiringly-exciting thing is that a couple of years ago, McGregor’s story was different. He was broke, on social welfare payment and unemployed but now, he has money, he gives money and he parties with the “big boys” and much more…..
How did McGregor get here?
According to McGregor himself, a lot of times, he credits his success to his “girlfriend’s push”. He would say, “my girlfriend was the one who pushed me the most, she encouraged me to go for it”………
In case you don’t know, according to the press, McGregor was up until “recently” broke, unemployed and one of the things the press focuses on the most was that at some point, he couldn’t afford his own medication but now, that whole story is history because now, he can buy anything money can buy……
What We Can all Learn From Him:
1, Where We Were Born Can’t Stop Us:
McGregor was born in Crumlin, Dublin, one of the “regular places” to a “regular family” with a “regular background”. He wasn’t born with a silver spoon in his mouth and didn’t attend any fancy schools. He was your everyday normal guy but if you type in Conor into Google now, all things McGregor is sure to pop up in your face.
Lesson 1:
Where you were born shouldn’t stop you from succeeding, it should motivate you to. If you were not born in a place where you think you won’t achieve anything good in your life, do everything you can to move to where you can grow. It may take time to move BUT move to where you can do great things with your life. Trust me, you can move, you are not a tree. Move, it is a risk, a bold step but it will pay off, it will be worth it.
2, Who We Surround Ourselves with Matters:
I did a video a while back ago talking about why you should surround yourself with good people + focused on the pointer that the ones you hang out with can make or break you (See video below). Walk with the wise and you will become wiser and walk with the foolish and you will become foolish, does this sound familiar?
I mentioned above that McGregor a lot of times would credit his success to his girlfriend. I do not blame him because he had someone who encouraged him, motivated him and cheered him on to go get it. According to press, his girlfriend is living large with that kind of McGregor’s money
The people you surround yourself with can make or break you. If you have people cheering you on, supporting you, motivating you, encouraging you and more, you will do well not matter what. Even if you suffer set backs, feel discouraged if results don’t come on time, you will get there eventually.
However, if you are surrounded by people who constantly bring you down, gives you reasons to doubt, don’t see the best in you or do not encourage you, you are likely to be confused, demoralised, doubtful and your best may never come forth.
Lesson 2:
Surround yourself with positive people. A lot of times, it is hard to let go BUT if this would help you be who you want to be, let go and go get it.
3, Be Your Own Driver & Cheerleader
Once McGregor found out that he could do cage fighting, he continued training and showed up everyday. Today, he is considered a Martial Artist and a Professional Boxer. McGregor didn’t start out with those titles but now he is described with them. WHY?
He knew what he could do and he ran with it. He showed up everyday. He trained and trained and trained, if you like, call it practice, practice, practise. He had bruises, suffered injuries and much more but most importantly, he has a lot to show for it; he is popular here in Ireland and now in the world, he is influential and he has money; he is not broke anymore
Lesson 3:
Let your passion drive you. Drive yourself to succeed. Be your own cheerleader. Encourage yourself to do better. Leave your comfort zone. Fight for what you want. Work hard for it. Fight in prayers. Seek good counsel. Go get it. Try your hardest to be who God has called you to be. Hold on, change will come.
Those are the 3 real life reasons WHY we all have to “Be McGregored”. You may have being born poor, this is because you couldn’t control that, but if you remain poor, it is your fault. Do what you can to get out of what you do not like. If you have to re-train in education or training, do it. If you have to move from where you are to a place where you can focus on you, do it. If you have to de-clutter your life of people who don’t see the best in you, do it. If you have to wake up early and stay up late to work on your goals, do it. If you have to take a loan to pay your way through school, do it. If you have to eat once a day to safe money, do it. You will be glad you made the sacrifice.
Finally, it may not look as though BUT McGregor is thriving on his GIFTS or Talent. Sincerely, our purpose is linked to our gifts or Talents. The things we do effortlessly and naturally are the things we thrive at the most, they are our gifts / talents. Don’t waste yours, use it.
Thank you so much for reading. Be who you want to be. God bless
